How Long is a Wedding Ceremony?
Most wedding ceremonies in Australia run for around 20 to 30 minutes, while a legals-only ceremony can be done in 10 to 15.
Add readings, a longer love story, family involvement, or a ritual or two, and you’ll be looking at around 30 to 40 minutes. Anything longer than that and you'll have your guests standing for a time that’s probably longer than ideal, especially for older guests!
However, there's no rulebook that says a ceremony has to hit a certain length. The only non-negotiable part - the legal wording every Australian marriage requires - takes about 2 to 3 minutes, and everything else is up to you.
So what's actually in those 20-30 minutes? Roughly, here's where the time goes:
Processional: (2-3 min): your bridal party walks in, then you do. Longer bridal party, longer song, longer walk!
Welcome (2-3 min): Your celebrant says hello, set the tone, maybe cracks a joke, acknowledges whoever needs acknowledging, from special guests, those who’ve travelled from far, to those who couldn’t make it.
Your “story” (5-8 min): the most fun part! Everything from your questionnaire answers gets crafted into something that sounds like you, ideally not just a template with your names subbed in. Results will vary wildly by celebrant, so choose someone you vibe with and trust!
The legal bit (2-3 min): the Monitum, the bit where you both confirm there's no legal reason you can't marry each other. Every celebrant in the country says a version of this. It's the only part of the ceremony that isn't up to either of us.
Vows (1-3 min each): custom written or traditional, it’s up to you. Short vows can absolutely flatten a room just as hard as long ones, what truly matters is to speak openly and from the heart.
Ring exchange (2-4 min): fast, yet symbolic, sometimes someone drops one, but that’s way less common than you’d think!
Signing (3-5 min): you, your partner, and two witnesses sign the paperwork while music plays and everyone has a breather.
Announcement and exit (2-4 min): I say the magic words, you kiss, everyone loses their minds, you walk back out married! Add it up and you land pretty much exactly where the averages say you will - somewhere in the 20-30 minute zone.
What actually blows the timing out - It's rarely the ceremony itself, but usually one of these:
A reading or two extra that nobody timed beforehand
Every groomsman and bridesmaid getting their own slow entrance song
Long pauses waiting on tech issues, wind, or a flower girl having a moment
Multiple people speaking who weren't factored into the run sheet
None of that's a bad thing if you've planned for it! It's only a problem when nobody accounted for it and your photographer's timeline quietly falls apart in real time.
Does longer mean more meaningful? Absolutely not! I've done ceremonies at 15 minutes that had everyone reaching for a tissue, and seen ceremonies at 35 minutes that felt like a long reading from the Book of Phone.
The length isn't what makes it land, it's whether the thing you're saying actually sounds like you two, and whether your guests are fully locked in or just waiting for cocktail hour to kick off.
If you're outdoors in a Perth summer with everyone standing in full sun, that's also a solid argument for keeping things tight. Nobody's ugly-crying over your vows when they’re dying quietly of heatstroke or dehydration.
My take: give the ceremony enough time to actually say something real about you two - because that's the whole reason everyone's there in the first place, before the bar opens and the real chaos begins. But don't pad it out just because you think a wedding "should" go for a certain length. 20 to 30 minutes is the sweet spot for most couples, and it's rarely the runtime people remember - it's whether it actually sounded like you.
